Former Sutton resident Jonathan E. Griess, 91, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2020, at CHI Health Good Samaritan in Kearney, NE.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 3, 2020, at Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton, NE with Rev. Carl Gobelman officiating. Interment will follow at the Sutton Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 1 p.m. – 7 p.m., with the family present from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, NE.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later.

With the continued spread of COVID-19, masks and social distancing are requested at all functions. Services will be live-streamed from Sutton Memorial Chapel's Facebook page

Jonathan was born at his home on the farm near Sutton on July 28, 1929, to Otto and Martha (Huber) Griess. He was one of eight children, four girls and four boys. He received his education in Sutton and graduated from Sutton High School in 1946. He served in the United States Marine Corps from November 1951 until November 1953. He met Mildred Lindblom in November of 1954. On May 11, 1955, he and Mildred were married and to this union, a daughter Gina Renae was born on February 17, 1958. In 1955, they made their home on a farm east of Sutton where they resided until 2011, when they moved to the Veteran’s Home in Grand Island, NE. In January of 2019, Jonathan moved to the new Veteran’s Home in Kearney, NE.

He was a member of Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton, NE. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing his guitar and singing with Mildred. Jonathan also loved playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jonathan is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Steve Borders of Sutton, NE; granddaughters, Stephanie and husband Jake Harms of Hildreth, NE; Jennifer and husband Josh Coulter of Windsor, CO; and great-grandsons, Levi and Alex Coulter both of Windsor, CO.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; his parents; sisters, Ruth and Rachel; and brothers, Ephraim and Daniel.
