Janice "Jan" Mae Ulmer

Feb. 21, 1938 - Jan. 26, 2020

Former Grafton resident, Janice “Jan” Mae Ulmer, 81, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2020, at Legacy Square in Henderson, NE.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 1, 2020, at Hope Reformed Church with Rev. Scott Henry officiating. Interment will follow at the Sutton Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later.

Janice was born February 21, 1938, to William and Hilda (Borchers) Schukei in Hastings, NE. She was one of five girls born to the family. She grew up on a small farm near Juniata, NE and graduated from Holstein High School in 1956. After graduating she moved to Hastings, NE and began her employment with Dutton-Lainson. On October 16, 1960, she married LoRayne Ulmer in Juniata, NE and to them, four children were born. In 1960, they moved to Bellingham, WA and returned to live at LoRayne’s family farm near Lushton, NE in 1965, where she was a homemaker for the family. In 2013, due to her health, she became a resident of Legacy Square in Henderson, NE.

Janice was a member of Hope Reformed Church in Sutton, NE. She loved music and could play the piano by ear. While residing at Legacy Square and battling dementia, music would oftentimes calm her and many times you could walk past her room and hear her singing along with the music.

Janice is survived by her husband, LoRayne Ulmer of Henderson, NE; sons, Randy Ulmer of Grafton, NE; and Scott (Michele) Ulmer of Grafton, NE; daughters, Denise Ulmer; and Stacy (Terry) McCoy of Fairmont, NE; sisters, Lois (Darrell) Bullard of Hastings, NE; and Ethel Schukei of Hastings, NE; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; brothers-in-law, Laurence (Phyllis) Ulmer of Sutton, NE; Ken (Sue) Ulmer of St. Louis, MO; and Dean (Wanda) Ulmer of Emery, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Janice is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Marlene Schukei; and Joan Werner; father-in-law, Edmund Ulmer; and mother-in-law, Christine Ulmer.

My condolences in the loss of your lovely wife, LoRayne.
My husband Chuck was a resident of Henderson Care Center starting Oc 6, 2016. I remember the Valentine couples dinner in the chapel Febr 2017. We met LoRayne and Janice during that dinner. We had a very nice visit.
Janice always had a smile when we would meet and visit.
I remember both Janice and my husband Chuck loved ice cream.
I pray God’s comforting arms are around all the family.
