He was self-employed as a farmer, rancher and livestock order buyer. He served in the army reserve and was a member of the Sutton American Legion.

Over the 50 years of being a sheep order buyer, Leo made numerous lifelong friendships with the people he came in contact with through his sale barn visits. As a farmer, he grew various crops of corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa. He was a big supporter of the local 4-H livestock premium auction and Sutton FFA program. In his later years, the Overturf Cattle Company was formed through him and his sons. Leo's passion was raising Charolais-cross cattle.
