Harvard, NE resident, Arlene Slater, 87, passed away Friday, June 23, 2017, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 27, 2017, at the United Church of Christ in Harvard, NE with Pastor Dave Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at the Harvard Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel in Clay Center, NE.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the United Church of Christ in Harvard or Clay County 4-H Council.

Arlene May Beavers was born March 21, 1930, on her parents’ farm near Hepburn, IA to Walter and Anna “Ruth” (Adkins) Beavers. She graduated from Villisca Community High School in 1948 and Northwest Missouri State College in Marysville, MO in 1952, where she obtained her bachelor’s degree in biology education. Arlene taught junior high science in Prescott and Villisca, IA public schools before marrying her soulmate, Donald Glen Slater on December 7, 1958, in Villisca. Together they had five children and raised a niece while making their home on a farm in rural Harvard. They were also blessed with 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Arlene was a member of the United Church of Christ in Harvard. She enjoyed the close friendships that she made as a member of the Happy Homemakers Extension Club of Clay Center and served as a 4-H leader for the Sandy Valley 4-H Club. A devoted mother and grandmother, Arlene cherished spending time with family and enjoyed counted cross-stitch, baking, gardening and canning. She also loved Nebraska football, watching Jeopardy, and solving Sudoku.

Survivors include her children, Gary (Cathy) Slater of Harvard, NE; Sharon (Robert) Biggs of Overland Park, KS; Glen (Anne) Slater of Clay Center, NE; Diane (Ted) Mallette of Ames, NE; and Ann (Daryl) Brodd of Ames, NE; special niece, Sandy Slater Voss of Colorado Springs, CO; brother, Tom (Patsy) Beavers of Shenandoah, IA; and brother-in-law, Carl Stephens of Villisca.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald; sisters, Lois Stephens and Virginia Slater and brother-in-law, Roland Slater.

We were sad to hear that Arlene had passed away. We're sorry that we won't be able to make it up for the visitation or funeral. But, are keeping the whole Slater/Beavers family in our thoughts and prayers during this time.
